Al menos 186 periodistas en activo, 93 de ellos en América Latina, han muerto por la Covid-19.
Muchos después de cubrir noticias relacionadas con la pandemia, informó hoy la ONG Campaña Emblema de Prensa (PEC, en sus siglas en inglés).
La organización, que habitualmente recopila datos de ataques a la profesión periodística, afirmó que la cifra real de decesos es seguramente mucho mayor, ya que muchas muertes por coronavirus entre estos profesionales no han sido diagnosticadas como tal o hechas públicas.
Tras Latinoamérica se sitúa Asia con 34 fallecidos, seguida de Europa (26), África (19) y Norteamérica (14).
Perú es el país con el mayor número de defunciones confirmadas entre sus informadores, 37.
Le siguen Brasil con 16 muertes, México con 14, Estados Unidos con 13 y Ecuador con 12, de acuerdo con los datos de PEC, que en su página web (www.pressemblem.ch) detalla cada caso individualmente.
Por otra parte, la organización señaló que en la primera mitad de este año han sido asesinados 33 periodistas en dieciocho países, una cifra ligeramente menor a la del año pasado (38 en el mismo periodo de 2019).
México «sigue siendo el país más peligroso» para la profesión periodística, al ser donde más muertes violentas de informadores se producen, añadió.
